    Fellow Democrats,

If you’re like me you’ve felt a range of emotions – grief, sadness, anger – over the last week. It wasn’t just about Hillary’s loss, the Democratic Party, or not breaking that highest, hardest glass ceiling. It was the about the future of our country, near total Republican government, and the fact that the government we will soon have does not represent the progressive America we know her to be.

But as someone once told me, you should always take anger and turn it into action. That’s what we intend to do with the Orange County Democrats. Our party has the opportunity to be the pulse of the North Carolina Democratic Party. We recruited more volunteers than most in the state and more than some state parties across the country. We are well positioned to help break Republican government.

Please join us for an organizing meeting, even if you don’t know how you want to be involved. We might have special elections following redistricting as early as next November and we’ll need to assist in defeating Republican legislators in those new districts. Of course, we’ll have midterm elections in two years and will need to help protect the Governor’s Mansion.

Please join us on Sunday, December 4th from 3pm to 5pm at the Southern Human Services Building (2501 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill). Let us know you’re coming by RSVPing via this link: http://orangedems.ngpvanhost.com/form/1720358134358280192

    In solidarity,

    Matt Hughes

PS – Feel free to forward this email to your friends and get them involved!

I’m still shaking my head in disbelief from yesterday’s election.  There were so many surprises that no one anticipated—not only in North Carolina, but across the United States.

We Democrats in Orange County need to be proud of our efforts.  Because of you, we were able to increase our Democratic turnout.  We have some of the largest winning margins in North Carolina.  That’s because of your hard work, perseverance, and dedication.  Thank you!

We had some prominent victories.  Elaine Marshall won her re-election.  In fact, of all the Democrats on the ballot, she received the most votes.  Orange County native Josh Stein won too, and I look forward to him serving as our next Attorney General.  Mike Morgan was elected to the NC Supreme Court—because of you, we will have our only African American male on the state court.

Even though Roy Cooper declared a victory, Pat McCrory has not conceded.  I understand that McCrory will request a recount before he determines anything.

We cannot dismiss what happened last night.  We lost some of our Democratic Council of State incumbents.  We lost some Democratic members in the House and Senate.  We elected a president who is on record bragging about his racism, misogyny, and hatred of others not like him.  History has a way of repeating itself.  We need to stick together now more than ever.

We have only two more days until the election, then we can resume to our regular lives.  I want to celebrate Tuesday night with major victories—how about you?
This election has been one of the most volatile in history, but it’s almost over.
During the course of the election, we have witnessed the volatility of Donald Trump.  He created a fake university, refused to pay his vendors, filed numerous bankruptcies, sues anyone who criticizes him, talks in a derogatory, sexist, racist manner.  Our country does not need Trump as our president.
Hillary Clinton is more qualified to be president than the past several presidents combined.
I don’t know about you, but I’m super excited about electing our first woman president on Tuesday.
Please join me in reminding at least 25 people to vote on Tuesday.
P.S., Join us at our Orange County Victory Party on Election Night. We will be gathering at R&R Grill (137 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill) beginning at 7:30pm when polls close. RSVP here: https://www.hillaryclinton.com/events/view/vdrzzren3cs73n3i/

“Registered Democrats are 3.4 percent behind their same-day totals from 2012, while registered Republicans are ahead of their same-day totals at 6.2 percent and registered unaffiliated voters continue to move ahead of their same-day totals, at 37.7 percent. Democrats have been slowly chipping away at their deficit, while unaffiliated voters and Republicans continue to grow their expansion.”
This is from an analysis of early voting by Old North State Politics Blog.

In just days, polls will have closed, and we will learn the results of this year’s election. We cannot allow our sweat, tears and hard work be in vain.  We Democrats must turn out so we can win!

The good news: we have through Saturday to vote early and all day on Tuesday, November 8th.  The bad news: we need to increase our turn out by at least 8%.
Right now, we need you to call 25 of your friends and remind them to vote.  We need you to post on social media reminders to vote.  Through election day, we need you to get 25 more people to the polls.
In Orange County, we increased the turnout in 2014 for Kay Hagan—we can do it again in 2016 for Hillary, Deborah, Roy, and Josh Stein.  They are counting on us.
    Onto victory!
